The coolant temperature sensor is on the rear of the engine, towards the top near the air intake hose. Move the air intake hose and you will see a single wire connector going to small sensor. The CTS is located on the block on the cylinder 4 side of the motor.
The sensor is threaded into the coolant passage in the back of the cylinder head.

It could be the wiring, or more likley the temperature sender is bad.

On a 1996 Ford Explorer , 4.0 liter EFI , V6 engine : The coolant temperature gauge sender is by the engine cooling thermostat housing ( follow the TOP radiator hose from the radiator , it connects to a metal pipe which is part of the thermostat housing ) When standing in FRONT of the vehicle , I BELIEVE it is the sender on the LEFT , the other sender is used for the EEC V / OBD II system
