Usually the Blessed Virgin Mary appears only to the humble, like children and peasants, and only when there is great need. The way to tell if an appairation is real or not is to look at the message. The only message that Our Blessed Lady ever gives when she appears is to Look to Her Son, to pray very much, and to offer sacrifices for the conversion of poor sinners.

During the twentieth century, there have been 386 cases of Marian apparitions. The Church has made "no decision" about the supernatural character regarding 299 of the 386 cases. The Church has made a "negative decision" about the supernatural character in seventy-nine of the 386 cases.

Out of the 386 apparitions, the Church has decided that "yes" there is a supernatural character only in eight (8) cases: Fatima (Portugal), Beauraing (Belgium), Banneux (Belgium), Akita (Japan), Syracuse (Italy), Zeitoun (Egypt), Manila (Philippines) (according to some sources), and Betania (Venezuela).

Local bishops have approved of the faith expression at the sites where these eight apparitions occurred. Besides the eight approved apparitions, there have been eleven (out of the 386 apparitions) which have not been approved with a "supernatural character," but which have received a "yes" to indicate the local bishop's "approval of faith expression (prayer and devotion) at the site."

The first apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary would be in 40 AD when she appeared to St James the Greater. St James had traveled to Spain to convert those he encountered and became discouraged. During this time, Mary the mother God appeared to him and presented him with a small wooden statue of herself and a column of Jasper wood. The city was Zaragoza, Aragon Spain. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar was built in Mary's honor as a result.

There are so many apparitions of the Blessed Mother of God. Some of them are in Israel, when the Blessed Mother visited her cousin who is Elizabeth. In Spain, when she appeared to saint James. The visitation of the Holy Virgin in Spain is called "Our Lady of the Pillar."* In Fatima, Portugal, when she appeared to three little shepherds. This apparition in Portugal is called "Our Lady of Fatima." In Akita, Japan where the Blessed Virgin appeared a Japanese Nun. This is called "Our Lady of Akita." On La Salette, a small mountaintop village in France where he appeared to 2 children. The apparition is called "Our Lady of La Salette." There's so many to mention.
