Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone released from the adrenal glands (which are intimate to the top of your kidneys) in response to stress. Cortisol signals the release of sugar from the cells of the body in order to fuel the stress response. Chronic stress causes a condition of chronic cortisol release, resulting in an unbalancing of all of the steroid hormones over time. The complexity of the symptoms is baffling to the untrained, and the plethora of conditions that result are often treated by the medical community in heroic fashion, i.e. they cut something out. Like the uterus, or the ovaries, or both. These imbalances are much more realistically treated with diet and nutrition and lifestyle modification, which is only going to work when the patient understands the basis for the problems being manifested. However, since your medical doctor is trained in a confused way, they will hot be able to help you.
