Luke 15 v11-32.

And he - Jesus - said, A certain man had two sons: And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. And he said to him, Thy brother is come; and thy father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound. And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him. And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: But as soon as this thy son was come, which has devoured thy living with harlots, thou has killed for him the fatted calf. And he said to him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

A character in a parable Jesus told to illustrate how generous God is in forgiving sinners who repent. The Prodigal Son was a young man who asked his father for his inheritance and then left home for "a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living." As his money ran out, a famine occurred, and he went to work tending pigs, but even then he could not get enough to eat. He returned home, knowing that he had given up his right to be treated as his father's son, but hoping that his father would accept him as a hired servant on the farm. Seeing the Prodigal Son coming from a distance, the father rejoiced and ordered the fatted calf to be slaughtered for a feast to celebrate the son's return. The Prodigal Son's elder brother returned from the fields while the feast was going on and was angry. He complained that he had never been treated to such a feast, though he had remained and worked diligently for his father while the Prodigal Son was away. The father reassured him, saying that the elder son would still get his inheritance, but it was right to celebrate the return of the Prodigal Son: "For this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found."

Luke 15 11-32 interesting how most people think the parable is about the son that took off. I think the story is about the other son who thought by being good would get him his fathers attention (or salvation) he was wrong. Being good will get you a good life but it will not get you salvation.

Sometimes it is hard to find where Jesus taught or performed some of His miracles, but he was probably in Jerusalem when He told of the Prodigal son and other parables. Luke, chapters 14-15. See 13:34.

The exact place is not mentioned in The Bible so it is unknown.

(Luke 15:11-24) 11 Then he said: "A certain man had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the part of the property that falls to my share.' Then he divided his means of living to them. 13 Later, after not many days, the younger son gathered all things together and traveled abroad into a distant country, and there squandered his property by living a debauched life. 14 When he had spent everything, a severe famine occurred throughout that country, and he started to be in need. 15 He even went and attached himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to herd swine. 16 And he used to desire to be filled with the carob pods which the swine were eating, and no one would give him [anything]. 17 "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many hired men of my father are abounding with bread, while I am perishing here from famine! 18 I will rise and journey to my father and say to him: "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Make me as one of your hired men."' 20 So he rose and went to his father. While he was yet a long way off, his father caught sight of him and was moved with pity, and he ran and fell upon his neck and tenderly kissed him. 21 Then the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Make me as one of your hired men.' 22 But the father said to his slaves, 'Quick! bring out a robe, the best one, and clothe him with it, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. 23 And bring the fattened young bull, slaughter it and let us eat and enjoy ourselves, 24 because this my son was dead and came to life again; he was lost and was found.' And they started to enjoy themselves.

The parable of the Prodigal Son can be found in the Gospel of Luke chapter 15. The parable is one of three Jesus told in reply to the Pharisees and scribes when they complained saying ........"This Man receives sinners and eats with them." Luke 15:2.

The parable is the story of a young man who asks his father for his inheritance and then he goes off to a foreign land and wastes his money on 'riotous' living. When the young man has exhausted all his money he has to work on a pig farm and he is so hungry he eats the pig food. After a while he decides to go back to his father and work for his father because his father's servants lives better than him. So he goes back to his father, his father sees him coming and welcomes his son at the gate. The father is so please his lost son has returned he calls for a calf to be killed and they have a welcome party for the lost son.

When was the prodigal son written?

Jesus is thought to have told many parables, such as the parable of the Prodigal Son, in order to teach the moral truths behind the parables. Jesus probably never really spoke these parables, because most or all of them were created by writers long after his death so as to give substance to Jesus' teachings. This is as true of the parable of the Prodigal Son as of other New Testament parables. The Parable of the Prodigal Son appears in the Gospels of Luke (15:11-32). Like all the New Testament gospels, Luke was originally anonymous, so we do not know who the author really was, in spite of the attribution to Luke later in the second century.
