Napoleon was first exiled to the Island of Elba, but after escaping and fighting the Seventh Coalition at Waterloo, he was exiled to the Island of St. Helena. Because he had broken his parole at Elba a remote and secure site in the South Atlantic was chosen for his second exile.

First he was exiled to the island of Elba after he was first deposed in 1814. He was allowed to rule the island as a sovereign ruler, as dictated by the victors at the Congress of Vienna. However, in early 1815, Napoleon sailed from Elba and landed in southern France, starting his famous Hundred Days. After his Marshall's failed to stop the advance of the Prussians at Ligny and Quatra-Bras, Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo. Soon after he was taken into British custody and sent to the distant island of St. Helena, where, some say, he soon died of arsenic poisoning.
