It is believed that first version of the game we known as poker was invented by sailors from New Orleans, Louisiana in 1829, with a deck of 20 cards, four players betting on which player's hand was the most valuable. The spread of the game from there to the rest of the country by Mississippi riverboats, on which gambling was a common pastime. The game has come a long way from this original version!

It is believed that the first card games were played in 1377. We can call "teen Patti" or Persian games "As Nas" or the French game "Poque" to be the predecessor of Poker games. Poker was developed sometime during early 19th Century in the United States. The game has grown since then and gradually developed to become one of the popular online or live game in the modern days, almost Worldwide. Poker was predominantly believed to be a family card game that includes skill, strategy and variants thus making it a favorite among masses.

After conducting a research on the same, we noticed the similarity of Poker with Indian game "teen Patti" or English game "brag". As stated earlier the game was invented in the U.S but we must mention this was a game invented in surprise - Texas Hold'em Poker. This game was invented since the game of Texas Ranchers could not accommodate too many of the players.

The exact origins of poker are unclear. It seems to have originated from a 16th century Persian card game known as As Nas. This game was played with 25 cards with 5 different suits. The game played in a similar fashion to modern 5 card stud and possessed similar poker hands rankings, such as three-of-a-kind. When Europeans began to play the game, they called it 'poque' or 'pochen.' While poker's origins may lie in Europe and Persia, it truly developed in the United States. Poker was first widely played in New Orleans in the early 1800's. Prior to the American Civil War, poker spread quickly from New Orleans to towns throughout the Western frontier. Poker's spread was the result of a general spread of gambling during the era. The West was comprised largely of speculators and travelers, both groups that enjoyed gambling. Gambling suited the speculator's individualistic and risk-taking traits. Unburdened by family needs and the social stigmas of Southern and Northern culture, travelers were allowed to indulge in this vice for their own entertainment.

Early poker history is rather unclear, but there are a few different theories about the origin of poker. Some say that it is a decedent of the Persian game of As Nas, some say that it originates from a French card game called Poque, and some say it's neither. The thing is that non of these ancestors of poker share all its features, so there is also a theory that poker is basically a combination of many earlier games. Now, if that is true, then poker history and poker as we know it today(almost) was born on the river banks of Mississippi. It was first played in river boat card rooms in early 19th century.

The game first played in river boat card rooms of Mississippi had all the characteristics of the game of poker we play today, but it was still played a little differentially. For one it was played with a deck of 20 cards and it was a version of what we now know under the name 5 card draw(at first without the draw). Later on the game developed into a 32 card deck game and a little later into a game played with what is today a standard 52 card deck. The next game to appear after the older more crude version of 5 card draw, was stud in the late-mid 19th century. After that the game enjoyed a few changes with introductions of special rules that made one game into many. Finally the most popular variation today came to be in early 20th century, Texas Holdem.

This is a short history of how poker in general "came to be", but, if you'd wish to know the exact evolution of each poker game from the beginning to where it is today, you could write a book(and many people already did:))
