The highest concentrations are mostly in the western states (http:/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranium_mining#United_States). It can also be found in ppm quantities is soil everywhere and it contributes to the background radiation levels. It would be very unusual not to find it and its daughters in the soil right next to your house. Also, uranium exists in 2-3 ppb quantities in seawater. (http:/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranium#Occurrence) There have been tests to determine the viability of extracting the uranium from the seawater as opposed to mining, but mining, espeically by the in situ method, is always cheaper.

Most of the civilian power for the past 20 years or so in the US has been produced by uranium that has been downblended from former Soviet era warheads. Downblending is the process where high enriched uranium (HEU, >90% U-235) is mixed with depleted uranium (uranium with 0.2-0.3% U-235) to make low enriched uranium (LEU, <20% U-235). The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) limits the maximum U-235 in American civil power plants to 4.95% U-235. This program is going to expire soon, around 2012. At that point, uranium mining will start back up and the US will enrich uranium using the centrifuge method at two plants in Ohio and Kentucky.
