The Allied Forces had been in Northern Africa defeating the Germans. They captured the surrendering German Nazis and sent them onto the United States to prison camps and to camps in the UK. They left some Allied Forces in Africa then moved onto Sicily and Italy. They defeated the Axis forces there. The Italians were elated to be freed of the Nazi and Mussolini tyranny.

Where did the allies attacked Italy from?

The first Italian landings were on the island of Sicily, in July 1943, with both British and American troops landing on the southern Sicilian coast at several locations. The Sicilian campaign lasted about six weeks. After the conquest of Sicily, in September 1943 British troops crossed onto the toe of the Italian boot from Sicily, and other British troops came from Bizerte, Tunisia, in Africa, and landed at Taranto, on the instep. About a week later American troops landed at Salerno, on the shin, about twenty-five miles south of Naples. The day before the American landings Italy surrendered, but the Germans, who were already numerous in Italy, continued to defend against the Allies. The Germans were able to defend the rugged terrain very viciously, so the Allies tried an additional landing behind the German defensive lines in January 1944, coming ashore at Anzio and Nettuno, about twenty-five miles south of Rome.

What island did the Allies conquer that led the Italian government to negotiate peace?

SicilySicily and Sardinia are both part of Italy. The Allies invaded Sicily in Julyu 1943 first and began having a difficult time holding them back even with support of German units. The citizens had had enough of war and losses of their fathers and sons. Italy did not want War to come to their soil and to their precious cultural cities. War on their on soil convinced them to ask for terms of surrender. The Allies would not allow the Italians to become allies with them. They demanded surrender. While this was discussed and some ideas of landing American paratroopers in Rome to protect their government, the fighting in Sicily continued until the end of August. After the fall of Sicily, the British 8th Army landed troops on the 'toe' of Italy and the US 5th Army embarked for a landing site further north. Italy finally announced their surrender on 8 September, the day before the invasion force landed at Salerno.

ON what island did the Allies land on that Mussolini was forced out of office?

Answer In July 1943, the Allies landed on Sicily after they had defeated the Germans & Italians in North Africa. Sicily is part of Italy, not just a colony. This was also the time that the Allies began to fly bombing missions over Italy's mainland and also over Rome. The Italians did not want to fight anymore and did not want the war to come to their homeland. With support from the King Emmanuel, the cabinet met and forced Mussolini to resign during the campaign for Sicily. The Italian government tried to secretly negotiate an alliance with the Allies and not let the Germans know what they were doing. The leaders of the Allies would not allow Italy to join them but required their surrender. When the Allied invasion force was heading to land at Salerno on 8 Sept, Italy agreed and announced their surrender.
