Around 44 C.E (A.D.)

They were first called Christians at Antioch, Syria Just to help paint this picture in history that helps us to know these things are real here is a little more of the canvas.: The first cerntury historian Josephus wrote that the Seleucids encouraged Jews to settle in Antioch and gave them full citizenship rights, thus establishing a sizable Jewish population. The first mention of Antioch in The Bible is in connection with Nicolaus from Antioch, who became a christian after becoming a proselyte to the Jewish religion. (Ac6:5)

In the Bible in Acts 11:26 it says that followers of Jesus were first called Christians in Antioch. It was a derogatory remark since Jesus had been executed like any one today that had been put to death for crimes against the state. Surprisingly followers wore this badge well since they would gladly follow Jesus even to death.

Acts 11:26 tells us that followers of Jesus were first called Christians in Antioch and, based on that passage, they were already being called 'Christians' in the 30s or 40s of the first century.

Dennis E. Smith and Joseph B. Tyson (Acts and Christian Beginnings) say this information is not found anywhere in the epistles of Paul. The designation is also not found in the New Testament gospels, although they were certainly written after this time. In fact, Smith and Tyson say "the term 'Christian' is rare to nonexistent in first-century writings" and that the nomenclature really became standard early in the second century, at which time Acts of the Apostles is now considered to be written.

Smith and Tyson say it is at least possible that the term 'Christians' was first used in Antioch, but that Acts 11:26 is not evidence for this. They say that the term may also have originated in Rome.
