Actually, there are a few First Ladies who preferred to stay in the background and hated the limelight. In the modern era, one of them was Bess Truman, wife of President Harry Truman. She would not talk to the media, did not hold any press conferences, and rarely agreed to be interviewed; she preferred to keep a low profile and remain away from the public eye as much as possible. She would allow an occasional photograph, but much preferred doing charitable work away from the cameras.

In the old days, one of the most shy and reclusive First Ladies was Jane Pierce, wife of President Franklin Pierce. She was in the White House in the early 1850s, and spent much of her time in extended mourning over the tragic loss of her twelve year old son (he died in a train accident). Very religious, and also suffering from health problems, she became even more solitary, and rarely socialized with the public or with the Washington elites.
