Many branches of Christianity teach this as being the day Jesus died at 3:00 PM our time. However, there are some in Christianity that teach He died on the daylight portion (Jewish tradition has days beginning and ending at sunset and not midnight as we do in the West) of Passover in the year 31 A.D. which was a Wednesday. He is buried just before sunset and the start of the Feast of Unleavened Bread - a high, annual Sabbath beginning that Thursday.

That is what mainstream Christianity teaches but this doesn't fit with the sign of Jesus' Messiahship given here: Matthew 12:40New International Version (NIV) 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. That means a full 72 hours and since Jesus never lied, it must have been so.

No matter how you count the 3:00 PM death and subsequent burial before sunset and the start of a new day (High Sabbath in Jewish calendar after Passover), and the early morning sighting by the women when it was still dark on the 1st day of the week - Sunday, can you come to 3 full days and nights. The absolute best you get with the most liberal way of counting is 2.5 days - all day Friday though He wasn't buried until almost sunset, all day Saturday the 1st Sabbath mentioned of two, and early morning Sunday while it was still dark. There is a better explanation. See below:

Because many modern scientist believe Jesus was crucified on the 4th Passover of His 3.5 year ministry, they have come to the following dates - remember Jewish days begin and end at sunset:

Last Supper - Passover night, 25 April 31 AD, 4th Passover as Sir Isaac newton first postulated.

Crucifixion - Passover day 25 April 31 AD, just before sunset and start of High Annual Sabbath.

Resurrection - Saturday Sabbath, 28 April 31 AD, just before sunset and start of first day - Sunday.

Ascension - Thursday, 07 June 31 AD Holy Spirit.

NT Church begins - Pentecost Sunday (50 days after resurrection Saturday), 17 Jun 31 AD.

He died on 'Good Friday' at around 3pm. The Jewish days start at 6pm. So Sunday, He rose and it was 3 days later just like He said He would rise.
