The First Amendment. This amendment is important because it guarantees that you can speak your mind without fear of persecution from those who might not like what you say. The federalists feared that the government would dictate an individual's beliefs. They wanted to avoid a state sponsored religion.(a religion picked by each state)

They believed that a free press would mean that the people would be informed about what was going on in government and in the country, without the governments interference about what they did and didn't want to be put in news papers, and so they could blind sight the people and the news paper would only put what the government wanted to people to know.

First 10 AmendmentsOpinions about which of the first 10 Amendments is most important will vary. Mine is that all are important and choosing one that is more important than the others is counterproductive to the meaning of the Bill of Rights as a whole.

In theory, no amendment in the bill of rights is more important than any other, though the 1st amendment (freedom of speech) is probably the one exercised more than any other.
