Fullerene C60 and C70 which are the third allotropes of carbon, subsequent to diamond C4 and graphite C6, have a beautiful spherical structure as shown in the figure. The form of Fullerene C60 resembles the dome built by the architect, Buckminster Fuller, and therefore, it is called "Buckminsterfullerene".

The existence of Buckminsterfullerenes was hypothesized by Osawa more than 35 years ago and discovered by Smalley and co-workers relatively recently. Afterwards, Huffman, Kratschmer and coworkers have reported on the method to generate Fullerenes in a considerably large quantity.

Fullerenes have been studied intensively, particularly in the fields of superconducting devices, ferromagnets, nonlinear optical materials, pharmaceuticals and the like.

Moreover, new Fullerene derivatives obtained by chemical modification are being made and the chemistry of the new C60 and C60 derivatives are being explored in many different fields.

Commercial uses of fullerenes Although fullerenes are not yet used commercially, applications are being researched, such as catalytic methane activation to higher hydrocarbons funded by the US Dept of Energy. Other properties of fullerenes and their compounds such as superconductivity have yet to be exploited.

NO!!! It is a non-metallic element. It exhibits several alloptropes, viz. Diamond., Graphite, and Buckminster Fullerene(Buckyballs). None of which are metallic.

Which American architect has the C60 allotrope of carbon named after him?

The C60 allotrope of carbon, also known as buckminsterfullerene, is named after the American architect and inventor Buckminster Fuller. He designed and popularized a geodesic dome structure that resembles the shape of the C60 molecule.

Buckminster Fullerene - a sphere of 60 carbon atoms covalently bonded. This advance in nanotechnology has paved the way for drugs to be transported in these Buckyballs to target areas around the body.

What do you call new substances?

IUPAC has rules that govern the naming of new susbstances. However, now and again the discoverers are allowed some lattitude. As an example C60 was named Buckminster Fullerene
