HBO's epic series "Game of Thrones" has won more Primetime Emmy Awards -- 38-- than any other drama in television history. On September 18, 2016, it broke the record of the sitcom "Fraser" (NBC, 1993-2004) as the most-honored scripted series. "Fraisier" is now in second place with 37.
The program -- based on the "A Song of Ice and Fire" fantasy series by author George R.R. Martin -- picked up three 2015-2016 Primetime Emmys at the live telecast:
The series won nine awards at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards held on two nights during the weekend of September 10-11, 2016:
"Game of Thrones" had been tied with two other television dramas -- "Hill Street Blues" (NBC, 1981-87) and "The West Wing" (NBC, 1999-2006) -- with a record total of 26 Primetime Emmy Awards.
"Northern Exposure" was named Outstanding Drama Series for the 1991-92 season.
"Hill Street Blues," "L.A. Law," "The West Wing" and "Mad Men" are tied with four Emmy wins each in the category of Outstanding Drama Series.
The HBO drama series "Boardwalk Empire" won eight 2010-2011 Primetime Emmys, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Martin Scorsese).

Numerous black celebrities have won Daytime Emmys throughout the years. One of the first to win for a daytime drama was Al Freeman Jr., who died on August 10, 2012 at the age of 79.. Freeman, who played Lt. Ed Hall on ABC's "One Life to Live"soap, won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor In a Drama Series in 1979.
During its six seasons on ABC, "Lost" won 11 Primetime Emmys in 55 nominations. It was named Outstanding Drama Series for the 2004-2005 season.
