DNA polymerase
Hydrolysis converts polymers to monomers by adding H2O between each monomer. In dehydration synthesis, the opposite occurs. As the name implies, water is removed in order to bond the monomers.
You can add some new clay to your old clay. I know that works. You could also try adding a tiny bit of water to your clay to make it softer.
The back-bone of DNA is called 'the sugar-phosphate backbone' because: the ribose [or the 2' [two-prime] deoxy-ribose] sugars that 'make up' the backbone binding portion of the (one of four) nucleotide bases is interlaced with the phosphate moieties. Compare to adding N to the C chain to gain strength.

Adding an acid to a solution will lower it's Ph, but adding a base will raise it's Ph.

DNA polymerases. As an incoming nucleotide base-pairs with it's complement on the template strand, a DNA polymerase adds it to the end of the growing daughter strand (polymer).

Insertion
At the design stage adding molecules/monomers with more rings than chains will make the polymer more rigid. If this option is not available, adding fiber or particles or fillers is the usual technique. You can make a stiff polymer more flexible by adding plasticizers, but going the other way is more difficult. Technically speaking the polymer itself isn't changing, but the material overall will be more rigid than the polymer matrix due to the fiber support.
frameshift mutation
All the polymer can not be made electrically conductive unless there are sufficient charge carriers available within the polymer itself. These charge carriers are responsible for conduction of electrical current. There is hardly a difference between a conducting polymer and conjugated polymer. The conjugated polymers have alternate single and double bond. Moreover, all conjugated polymers are conducting polymers. Their conductivity is increased on adding a suitable impurity in order to make free charge carriers.
