The major causes of the natural greenhouse effect are:

  1. Radiation from the sun. This heats the surface of the earth and the warm earth then radiates infrared rays into the atmosphere where they warm the greenhouse gases.
  2. The earth's water cycle. This moves water vapour in and out of the atmosphere. Water vapour is a greenhouse gas that helps keep the planet warm.
  3. The earth's carbon cycle. This moves carbon dioxide to and from the land, sea and sky. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that absorbs the sun's heat.

(The enhanced greenhouse effect is different. See the related question below.)

Heat (infrared light), originally from the sun, rises from the warmed earth into the atmosphere where it is trapped by greenhouse gases. These gases become warm, and they warm the air around them. Some of this heat goes back down to earth, where it warms the earth more.

Some greenhouse gases occur naturally. Water vapour and carbon dioxide move in and out of the atmosphere as part of the water and carbon cycles. Methane is emitted by rotting vegetation and animals. The greenhouse effect from natural causes is good for us, as it keeps the earth warm enough for life.

There are two greenhouse effects. The first is natural greenhouse effect, using greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and supported by the earth's water and carbon cycles, has kept the planet comfortably warm since before life began.

The second is the accelerated greenhouse effect, which is caused by the extra carbon dioxide released by burning fossil fuels. This extra carbon is too much for the normal balance of the greenhouse effect, so the earth is warming up - global warming.

The carbon cycle is the main cause of the natural greenhouse effect. This moves carbon dioxide in and out of the atmosphere, the biosphere and the hydrosphere.

There are no sources in nature that seriously contribute to the enhanced (or accelerated) greenhouse effect which is causing global warming. This is caused by human activity, the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in industry, transport and the generation of electricity, which releases carbon dioxide (CO2), and deforestation, which destroys the forests that used to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

What is the primary gas in the atmosphere responsible for the greenhouse effect?

Water Vapor is the gas that is largely responsible for the natural greenhouse effect that has warmed the earth for millions of years.Carbon dioxide is the gas that is largely responsible for the present accelerated greenhouse effect that is causing global warming.

Which gas is mainly responsible for the greenhouse effect?

The greenhouse effect contains two different components: the natural greenhouse effect, and the enhanced greenhouse effect that results from human activities and is the cause of global warming.Water vapour is the most plentiful greenhouse gas and is mainly responsible for the natural greenhouse effect that maintains the world at a comfortable temperature suitable for human existence. Carbon dioxide also plays an important part in this natural greenhouse effect.Carbon dioxide is mainly responsible for the enhanced greenhouse effect. In this case, water vapour plays only a minor part as an enhancer, because the atmospheric concentration of it will increase if the temperature rises for other reasons, then causing a further increase in temperatures.

What layer is most responsible for the green house effect?

A:All layers of the atmosphere contribute to the greenhouse effect. Water vapour is a contributor to the natural greenhouse effect, although it is unlikely to have a substantial bearing on the enhanced greenhouse efffect that we are now experiencing. Water vapour is present in the lower atmosphere, but the upper atmosphere is too cold for water vapour. Other greenhouse gases are present from the troposphere to the stratosphere.

What planet has more greenhouse effect?

Venus. Similar to Earth in many ways, a runaway greenhouse effect is thought responsible for its 900°F (480°C) surface temperature.

Which of the following gases are mainly responsible for the atmospheric greenhouse effect in the earth's atmosphere?

Oxygen and Nitrogen

Is the main atmospheric gas responsible for the greenhouse effect carbon dioxide?

The normal greenhouse effect which keeps the earth warm enough for life is caused largely by water vapour, with a small effect from carbon dioxide and methane. However, the greenhouse gas responsible for the present enhanced greenhouse effect is carbon dioxide, yes.

Which is the common greenhouse gas in the atmosphere?

The most common greenhouse gas responsible for the natural greenhouse effect is water vapour. Man has no control over its levels. When it gets too high, it falls as rain. The most common greenhouse gas responsible for the accelerated greenhouse effect is carbon dioxide (CO2), the high levels of which we are responsible for. CO2 is having the largest effect on the recent increases in global temperature.

The Greenhouse Effect.

Which effect is responsible for global warming?

The enhanced greenhouse effect in our atmosphere is believed to be causing global warming.

What greenhouse gases appear to be responsible for the enhancement of the earth's greenhouse effect?

Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxide, chloroflourocarbons

Is carbon dioxide a greenhouse effect?

No, carbon dioxide (CO2) is NOT an effect of the greenhouse effect. It is one of the causes. With other greenhouse gases it is responsible for the natural greenhouse effect, and the extra levels of CO2 from burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in industry, transport and the generation of electricity, are causing the enhanced (or accelerated) greenhouse effect which is why global warming is happening.

Is the greenhouse effect really responsible for global warming?

Yes, the greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon which has existed here for trillions of years and protected the earth from global freezing like the ice age. But increases in greenhouse gases mostly carbon dioxide caused by man's burning of fossil fuels is causing an enhanced, or accelerated greenhouse effect which is responsible for global warming.

Is pollution a part of the greenhouse effect?

Carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels are referred to as pollution because of the powerful effect they have in causing an enhanced greenhouse effect which is responsible for global warming.
