The LDS King James Version of The Bible has one of the best study guides I have seen. It contain dozens of references to words and paragraphs to help you understand what each reference means. It took four years to complete.

Choosing a Bible is a very personal matter. Many people feel that the best kind of 'study Bible' is a large print version, translated from the original languages (NOT paraphrased), and written in a language you can understand, preferably with space in the margins for notes, and a concordance in the back for reference. It's ALSO a good idea to have a variety of OTHER valid translations at your disposal, for comparison, a Bible encyclopedia available for filling in details, and a notepad for 'ah-ha !' moments.

Catholic AnswerThere is no "best" Bible, there is only the Bible. If you are asking which is the best translation, or the Bible with the best notes then the "best" would be the one that you actually read and use. Different Bibles are translated and their notes are written for different audiences. Check out the articles below to help you find the "best" Bible for you.

.

There are many translations currently available. Some are more along the lines of equivalence translation, trying to translate the concept that the Bible writers were trying to get across. One example would be The New Jerusalem Bible. Others are more literal, translating word for word, examples would include the old Douay-Rheims, which was translated from the Vulgate, or the Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition. The New Jerusalem has excellent notes, introductions to each book of the Bible, and copious footnotes. A really excellent version of the Revised Standard Version, at least for the New Testament is the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible which has probably the best commentary and footnotes I have ever seen in a Bible, much better and more complete than the New Jerusalem Bible. When it comes to a Catholic Bible, make sure that there is an Imprimatur and Nihil obstat on the back of the title page. These are official declarations that the Bible you are reading is free of error.

The best translation that I have found for answering question and explaining the faith is the Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition. But for devotional reading, it contains no notes, would be the Knox Version, which is a modern English translation from the Latin Vulgate made by Msgr. Ronald Knox in England around 1936-1950. It is excellent. See links below.

What Scriptures did the Catholic Church change in the Bible?

Roman Catholic AnswerYou are operating with a mistaken assumption. The Catholic Church wrote the Bible, the Catholic Church decided which books were canonical (included in the Bible), and the Catholic Church has conserved the Bible through the centuries. The only ones who changed any Scriptures in the Bible are the protestants, who, after fifteen centuries of a Bible preserved by the Catholic Church came along and threw books out of the Bible, and changed the meanings of books they would not throw out.
