The term supercomputing arose in the late 1920s in the United States in response to the IBM tabulators at Columbia University. The CDC 6600, released in 1964, is sometimes considered the first supercomputer.

Depending on your exact definition of supercomputer, its probably one of these:

  1. IBM NORC, 1954, only 1 built, United States Navy's Bureau of Ordnance
  2. UNIVAC LARC, 1960, only 2 built, built to Lawrence Livermore Labs requirements for nuclear weapons design
  3. IBM Stretch 7030, 1961, only 9 built, first system sold to Los Alamos for nuclear weapons design
  4. CDC 6600, 1965, more than 600 built, the first system was sold to CERN laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland to analyse millions of photographs of bubble-chamber tracks

Not everyone agrees on which computer was the first super-computer.

If you took a vote amongst all those old enough to remember computer history from the mid 1950s on, the winner would certainly be the Cray 1, probably by a landslide.

This machine, designed by Seymour Cray, was blindingly fast by the standards of the day; nobody gave the name super computer to anything produced before the Cray 1.

A supercomputer is defined as any computer with at least 10 times the speed and capacity of any standard computer of that time. Depending on which scholars you ask, one of the following computers was the first supercomputer:

  1. IBM NORC - 1952 - vacuum tubes - decimal 16 digit word
  2. UNIVAC LARC - 1960 - surface barrier germanium transistors - decimal 12 digit word
  3. IBM 7030 Stretch - 1961 - diffusion germanium transistors - binary 64 bit word, decimal variable word length
  4. CDC 6600 - 1964 - diffusion silicon transistors - binary 60 bit word

The first computer deliberately designed to be much faster than the fastest computer available was the IBM NORC built for the navy, the first true supercomputer built was the Univac LARC built for LLNL (both LARCs built only had one of two possible CPUs installed), the first supercomputer built in quantity (9) was the IBM 7030 Stretch built for Los Alamos and the NSA, the first mass produced supercomputer was the CDC 6600 (it was also the first RISC architecture computer).

It could be any of the following, depending on how you define "first supercomputer":

  1. IBM NORC (December 2, 1954) - Probably first computer designed specifically to be dramatically faster than other computers in use at the time.
  2. Univac LARC (June 1960) - Designed to LLNL specification, 1 MIPS to 2 MIPS.
  3. IBM Stretch 7030 (May 1961) - Design goal 10 MIPS, actual 1.2 MIPS.
  4. CDC 6600 (1964) - 1 MFLOPS. First mass produced supercomputer.

Control Data Corp. introduced the CDC 6600 in 1964 at which time it was three times faster than the IBM Stretch, which had been the speed champ for a couple years. The CDC 6600 achieved its speed by using ten peripheral processors pipelining data to a central processor that could process three million instructions per second.

What is India's first super computer?

India's First Supercomputer was PARAM 8000. PARAM stood for Parallel Machine. The computer was developed by the government run Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in 1991. The PARAM 8000 was introduced in 1991 with a rating of 1 Gigaflop (billion floating point operations per second). All the chips and other elements that were used in making of PARAM were bought from the open domestic market. The various components developed and used in the PARAM series were Sun UltraSPARC II, later IBM POWER 4 processors, Ethernet, and the AIX Operating System. The major applications of PARAM Supercomputer are in long-range weather forecasting, remote sensing, drug design and molecular modelling
