It all depends on what type, make and recording medium your camera uses.

If it is tape and has an analogue output (AV leads) then you will need a computer with a video capture device added.

The card or dongle will have appropiate connections on it, for the AV leads. The devices also come bundled with the software to do it and instructions.

Some digtial cameras use a 'firewire' connection. But again your computer will have to be equipped with the correct socket. If it isn't already, then it can be added.

If you camera uses digital media, such as disc or memory card, then insert the media in the correct slot on your computer. Open the files and copy and paste them onto your hard drive.

What software would you use to transfer pictures from a camera to a PC?

You actually don't need any specialized software to transfer the images. In most cases, you can connect your camera to your computer via a USB cable, treating your camera as an external storage drive and moving the files over. The other option is taking the memory card from the camera and inserting it directly into your computer if you have a card reader slot.

Need software to import photo from Pentax Optio s5i?

If upon connecting the camera to the computer with a USB cable, the computer recognizes the camera, you don't need additional software to access the camera's contents. All you need is to open My Computer and see the camera files from there. If the camera fails to get recognized by the computer, get a cheap USB card reader and use that to connect the camera's memory card to the computer. You will also use My Computer to see the files.
