Matthew and Luke. Both record the story of Jesus' birth.

Matthew explains Jesus' lineage from Abraham through David. This shows Jesus in the line of Abraham and David. By implication, he is the legal son of Joseph by adoption.

The two accounts of the birth of Jesus are to be found in Matthew (who describes the time after the birth and visit by the magi) and Luke (who gives the account of the time leading up to the birth, first of John the Baptist, and then of Jesus).

Luke's account is primarily quoted at Christmas.

Answer

Although they are quite incompatible the nativity stories of Matthew and Luke are both quoted at Christmas. Matthew's wise men and the star of Bethlehem are favourites, while Luke's shepherds are also favourites.

In general, Luke's Gospel story is more quoted than Matthew's. For Matthew, Bethlehem seems to have been the home town of Joseph and Mary, and Jesus seems to have been born in a house, where the magi ('wise men' or kings) found him. But Christians everywhere talk of the journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus in a stable, there being no room in the inn. Even when Matthew's magi are brought into the picture, their visit is portrayed as occurring in a stable.

Answer

There are two quite different Christmas stories in The Bible, one in Matthew's Gospel and one in Luke's Gospel. You could choose either one or, like most Christians, follow both and ignore the inconsistencies.
