Answer this question… European powers lost influence in African countries.
The scramble for Africa known as Race of Africa or Partition of Africa was the invasion, occupation and annexation of African territory by European Powers during the New Imperialism Period between 1881 and 1914. The Berlin Conference in 1884 which regulated European Colonization and trade in Africa, is cited as a convenient starting point. The last 59 years of the 19th century saw the transition from "informal imperialism" by military influence and economic dominance to the direct rule of colonies. Europeans still controlled only 10% of the African Continent. The other colonial powers Germany, Portugal, Spain, Belgium and Italy used varied administrative systems to facilitate control and economic exploitation.

In the context of World War II, Axis-controlled nations were not in fact the same thing as the Axis powers (or, nations) themselves. The main Axis powers, Germany, Italy, and Japan, invaded and then controlled numerous European and Asian nations and territories: these were occupied and used by the Axis Powers to further their own prosperity and ongoing war-efforts.
At this time in history, the European powers were interested in gaining territories as colonies in partway because the power of the United States and other non-European countries was rising. The Berlin Conference sought to establish guidelines for dividing the African continent.
