Both pacing and trotting are two beat gaits.

Pacing is when both legs on one side of the body move in unison. This isn't a natural gait for most horses.

Trotting is when diagonal pairs of legs move in unison. The left front leg and right hind leg move together, then the right front leg and left hind leg move together.

These are two beat gaits because the hooves on each pair of legs strike the ground at the same time, making a 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 rhythm.

What is a gated horse?

A gaited horse is a horse that displays a gait other than the normal "four" gaits. The average horse is able to perform four distinct gaits:Walk: a 4 beat gait where each foot hits the ground at a distinct point. (Front left, back right, front right, back left)Trot/Jog: a 2 beat gait where the opposite feet hit at the same time (Front left + back right, front right + back left)Canter/Lope: a 3 beat gait where one side leads (Back right, front right + back left, front left)Gallop: a 4 beat gait faster than the canter where all four feet hit a distinct point and there is a moment when all 4 feet are off the ground. So a gaited horse has other gaits as well. The most common is probably the pace (seen in Missouri Fox Trotters, Tennessee Walking Horses, and others). This can be as slow as a jog and as fast as a canter. It is when the front leg and back leg on the same side move together. When ridden, it feels like you are swaying back and forwarth, very smooth. Some other gaits are the running walk, the rack (Saddlebreds and such), the tolt (Icelandics).

Is there a Word for how a horse moves?

Movements of the horse are called gaits. You have 4 gaits and these are ;walk, trot, canter and gallop. Walk and gallop are 4 time gaits, trot is 2 and canter is 3. To mean a X time gait is to be able to count the number of legs moving speratly from one another before the gait starts again.

What is the difference between the Icelandic horses' tolt and it's other gaits?

An Icey's tolt is a very unique gait. It can be fast, slow, whatever. Unlike the trot, the tolt is a 4-beat gait. The trot is a 2 beat gait. Also, there is always one foot on the ground, there is never a moment of suspension, unlike the canter. This fact makes the tolt very comfortable to ride.
