Connecticut is one of the New England states, and also one of the Northeastern states. The Northeast region consists of two smaller regions, New England and the Mid-Atlantic or Middle-Atlantic states. The six New England states are Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. The Mid-Atlantic states are New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and some people also consider Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington D.C. to be part of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions as well.
There are 22 administrative regions in mainland France, and four more overseas. Each region is divided into smaller administrative areas called "départements" (96 départements in mainland France and 5 overseas; the overseas départements are the same as the overseas regions except Mayotte which was given département status in 2011 only)
