There are actually three states in the United States that grow tea: South Carolina, Hawaii, and Washington state.
Hawaii, being in a tropical area and having high-altitude areas with a lot of rainfall, is ideal for the tea plant. However, the higher cost of living makes the commercial production of tea less feasible there. Only a small amount of artisan teas are produced in Hawaii.
South Carolina has an old tea plantation, that is now owned by Bigelow, which sells it under the name "American Classic".
Washington State has a small tea growing operation, run by Sakuma Brothers produce.

Assam is one of the largest states which produce tea in India and are known for growing the original Indian tea.
Tea plants are nothing different , they are just plants from which we get tea leaves to prepare tea. these plants usually grow in hilly areas like ooty, Assam etc. Assam is the best known place for its tea plants. It is known world wide for its tea plants. these plants are grown till the height of at least 1 feet and then are cut down to get tea leaves. If these grow more than 1 or 1and a half feet, these loose their fragrance and are useless then.

These days, tea is harvested all over the word, really. The most well-known tea growing regions are located in Japan, China, India and Sri Lanka. Different regions are generally known for a specific type of tea. Perhaps the most famous tea growing region--although maybe not necessarily the highest quality--is the Darjeeling region of India, which is mainly known for the black tea it produces, although it is technically closer to an oolong tea.
Kentucky is probably much too cold to grow the tea plant outdoors. You might be able to grow tea plants in a cold frame, or you could grow them in a greenhouse. For comparison, coastal South Carolina and the milder coastal regions of Washington State both have commercial tea growing operations. The interior of the country, including Kentucky, usually has too extreme cold snaps for the plant. It can take a light frost but cannot handle prolonged cold.

Asia and it is still the primary tea growing area. Only one place in the United States grows tea and it is an island off the coast of South Carolina. The plants were brought there in the 1700's and are still growing. When growing tea the tops of the plant are cut and the rest of the plant is not cut, so the plant keeps growing.

There are numerous countries that are well-known for growing tea. The best-known two would be China and India. India is mostly known for black teas, whereas China produces countless different types of tea. After these countries, other well-known countries include Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Japan, and Taiwan (Formosa). Another country that has become important in recent years is Kenya. Turkey is also important. Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia also produce a lot of tea. But these countries are probably less well-known than the others I mentioned.
Depending on the type of tea you are growing it can be done anywhere.
It came with the colonists. On one island off South Carolina one person tried to grow tea. The plants are still there producing tea. When tea is grown only the tops are cut off the plant, so that means the original plants are still growing 200 years later. One of the products that came on ships to the colonies was English tea. The smugglers smuggled in Dutch tea which was popular because it was cheaper than the English tea.
