The Giro d'Italia that starts on May 9th, 2014, is the first of the three Grand Tours. The others being the Tour de France, (July 5th.) and Vuelta a Espana (Tour of Spain, August 23rd.) These are stage races, with 21 stages each, three weeks of some of the world's toughest bicycle racing. Each taking in some of the highest mountain passes each country has to offer.
The professional teams that compete in these races are international, with riders from different countries on each team. For example the two largest bicycle companies in America, Cannondale and Trek, have teams with riders from Italy, Germany, Holland, Croatia, Japan, Colombia, and Austria.
The only exception in this year's Giro d'Italia is Team Colombia, which, as its name suggests, has all Colombian riders. Some of the other main teams are, Astana,AG2R, Belkin, BMC, Gamin-Sharp, Movistar, Giant-Shimano, Katusha, Sky, and Tinkof-Saxo. There are 22 Teams, each with 9 riders, a total 198 cyclists.
