Lewis and Clark
Lewis and Clark were explorers, leading the famous 1803 expedition - the Corps of Discovery - from the Missouri to the Pacific Ocean; a trek intended to study the land and its characteristics and report back to President Jefferson. Although Lewis and Clark were soldiers, as were most of their expedition members, it was not a warlike excercise but simply an information-gathering expedition which turned out to be hugely successful and was accomplished with only one death, thought to be from appendicitis.
The purchase was made in 1803.
