Okinawa is a country made up of a number of islands south of Japan. It is now a part of Japan, but used to be a separate country with a king. It was also known as the Ryu Kyu Islands.

The healthiest people in the world are Okinawans from Japan.
Karate originated on Okinawa. It was taken to Japan in the 1930's.
It's there diet. They eat, exercise, a LOT. However, all that is starting to change, because theres Americans stationed here and now American food is becoming a trend and now there are some fat Okinawans. I try to eat the Okinawan diet though (vegetables, fish, and water).
Okinawans proudly call themselves uchinanchu (沖縄人) or "sea people" in the local dialect
it is said that a Chinese prince fled with his followers to japan which was then inhabited by people similar to present day Okinawans in the south and Ainu in the north.
Sort of, the first people to use the word were the Okinawans. They are now a part of Japan, but in the past were an independent kingdom with their own language.
Not that I am aware of. The Okinawans have a weapons kata that uses a turtle shell shield and short sword, but it doesn't weight 90 pounds.
Varios incaders forbade them from having weapons. Hope this helps
Karate was created in Okinawa. It was brought to Australia by the Japanese and Okinawans. While there were certainly practitioners there a long time ago, it was probably in the 1930's that it was first brought to the country.
The story of Okinawa is a sad one. It took a long time for the Americans and Allied Forces to capture that island because it was the last island for them to capture. The Japanese people had told the residents of Okinawa that the Americans would do horrible things to them if they captured the island. The Okinawans started killing themselves to avoid capture by the Americans. It took time to convince the Okinawans they were not going to be hurt by the American soldiers and Marines. By the time the message became clear thousands had killed themselves and their children. The military story is on the link below.
