Switzerland exists since 1291 as coalition to defend and support the interests of the former occupied regions - its states (called cantons). Three of them made this agreement and others joined until today (20 full and 6 semi-states).

The state of Schwyz gave the name and the flag to the country - already indicating its armed roots (red as symbol of life and death, the cross as symbol the christian emperors used). After 1291 the states were at war against the occupants, the earls of Habsburg. The now called Swiss troops reached the status of famous and expensive mercenaries in Europe... and fought in almost every conflict till 1515.

Even if Switzerland was one of the leaders of reformation, it still symbolically supports the Pope with the Swiss guards - they were paid in medieval times to save his life.
