In the short story My Father Goes to Court, a very poor family grows up next door to a very rich family. The rich family always has more than enough to eat, and the poor family never has enough.

The poor family enjoys hearing and smelling the good food at the rich family's house every day, and even though they don't always have enough to eat, they grow up healthy and strong and enjoy playing outdoors. The rich family stays indoors all the time and they grow up sickly and weak.

The rich man that is the head of his family notices this, and hires a lawyer to sue the poor family for stealing the spirit of their wealth and food. The poor man who is the head of his family defends himself because he is unable to afford a lawyer.

The rich man accuses the poor man of stealing the spirit of wealth and food, and their family does indeed look sickly and scrawny next to the poor man's family. So, the poor man says that he will pay him for what he stole. He proceeds to collect money from everyone in his family, then the courtroom, then other courtrooms in the building. He comes back and shakes the money and asks if the rich man can hear the spirit of the money, and the rich man says yes, and the poor man says "then you are paid."

After this, the judge dismisses the case and the family laughs.
