When Constantine the Great ended the tetrarchy (rule bu four), a system with four co-emperors, by winning two civil wars and became the sole emperor, he wanted to establish his own imperial capital. He redeveloped Byzantium and renamed it Constantinople after himself (Constantinople means City of Constantine). Today Constantinople is called Istanbul.
