The Senior Senator from the State of Louisiana is Senator Mary Landrieu. She is a Democrat and assumed office on January 3, 1997. She serves with her "Junior" colleague Senator David Vitter. She is the daughter of the former Mayor of New Orleans Moon Landrieu, and the sister of the current Mayor, Mitch Landrieu. She is the current Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
Senator Landrieu is a member of the New Democrat Coalition, which supports a moderate agenda. She is regarded as one of the most Conservative Democrat Senators. Politically she was a vocal opponent of America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 until it was amended with a 300 million payment to Medicaid in Louisiana. She has also been a spokesperson for victims of the 2005 Hurricane Katrina Disaster and cosponsored a federal aid package estimated at $250 billion.
