It is true the Malay Chieftain Lapulapu was responsible for the killing of Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer serving the Spanish monarch, in the battle of Mactan straits. However, the term Filipino does not apply to Lapulapu because the islands that now compose the modern day Philippines was not named Philippines until years later after Lapulapu died. It was another Spanish explorer, Roy Lopez de Villalobos, who claimed the islands of Luzon and Visayas for the Spanish king Felipe and named them Las Islas Filipinas. The term Filipino did not apply to the Malay natives or other indigenous inhabitants of the islands of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao until 1898 when Emilio Aguinaldo declared Philippine independence from Spain.
