Well there is a possibility that Tongans are the natives of South America. Some fled to the Island now called Tonga, others fled to the island now called Samoa. That is if Tongans and Samoans are the natives of South America. So there is not just one person who was the first to be Tongan, there were many people who became the first Tongans. If you want to know who those people were, nobody knows. Unless one of the first Tongans are still alive. That will be cool if I saw one of my first ancestors.

The full name of the main island of Tonga is Tongatapu (the forbidden south). The first people to arrive and dwell upon the island were the Lapita people. They at first settled in a fishing villiage called Nukuleka about 3,000 years ago. This information is according to Canadian archaeologist professor David V. Burley. In 2008 he stated that Tonga was the "cradle of polynesia." His finding challenged claims made by samoa, in advertising itself for decades as the "cradle of polynesia." According to the professor David V. Burley, it was at Nukuleka that theses Lapita peoples or "Melanesians," after settling.. developed a new culture with social structures upon this island, becoming a distinct people.. "Polynesians," before sailing off to colonise the uninhabited islands of the pacific.
