Legend has it in the 12th Century BCE.
There is no doubt that the real Troy (Hittite "Taruija" or "Wilusa") was fought over many times. No one knows if the Homeric tale represents an actual war or a compilation of many wars. If there was an actual war, the best date is probably from around 1260 BCE to 1240 BCE. It was during this time that the king of Hatti (king of the Hittites) exchanged correspondence with the king of Ahhiyawa (the king of Ahhiyawa was certainly Greek, and "Ahhiyawa" is probably a bastardization of "Achea"). In this correspondence, the king of Hatti (probably Hattusili III) complains of raids along his coastline and the king of Ahhiyawa's possible complicity, or at least the complicity of one of his subjects. The king of Hatti goes on to say that he and the king of Ahhiyawa had come to an agreement over the troubles in Wilusa.
This suggests that there was conflict between the king of Ahhiyawa (the Greek) and the Hittite vassal state, Wilusa, which was certainly the Greek "Ilios"; in other words, Troy.
The ones that fought against Troy was Menelaus, who was the husband of Helen before Paris came, his brother ,Agamemnon. Agamemon had Achilles and his Myrmidons on Agamemon's side. Also Odysseus was against Troy as well. Surprisingly even some of the Gods and Goddesses were against Troy also.
It is estimated the greek army numbered at least 50,000 based on the number of ships sent, and the capacity of ship in those days. This is only the initial sailing force, however and any subsequent additions to the original force are not mentioned. Many of these were probably not warriors, but servants and other camp followers. Actaully fighting men was proably not more than half of the total force.
There are no figures given for the number of Trojan defenders, though they were certainly outnumbered by the greeks. Based on the limited size of cities in those day they likely could not have numbered much more than 20,000; with many of these being low quality levies; the bulk of the fighting would have been done by the better trained and equipped warriors while the lesser troops held the city walls.

The battle of Troy took place in the city of Troy. The battle began outside of the cities walls, however the Greeks were able to sneak into the city by hiding in large wooden horse.
The siege of Troy probably happened around 1100 BC. The battle of Thermopylae was in 480 BC - about six hundred years later.
The opposing side gave Troy a wooden horse. The Trojans thought that it was a gift from Athena (goddess of battle strategy) and brought it into their city. Although they didn't know that the wooden horse was filled with their enemies and during the night the enemies opened the trap door of the wooden horse and destroyed Troy.
No. The Battle of Troy was not Fiction. There really was a Battle of Troy. The City of Troy was really destroyed. Archaeologists have discovered its ruins. Now, we have no idea how much of the story of the battle as retold in the Iliad and Odyssey was fiction. We do not know if the walls were breached by using a wooden horse or some other means. We do not know if the battle took 10 years. All we know for sure is that the city of Troy was destroyed by warfare.
Nobody killed her. She went back to Menelaus.
