There are several different organizations that certify Doulas and the requirements vary with each organization. A good resource for comparing the requirements of the certifying organizations is chart comparison available at Mother Care Doula Certification Chart. Most Doulas must complete a training workshop, read a required reading list of books, and participate in the birthing of 2 to 6 babies. Some Doula Certifiers require Doulas to pass an exam as well.

absolutely, if you have had a normal pregnancy & a trained professional to assist you....personally I think it is the best way to go....look into having a midwife or a Doula (for more info on Doulas try here www.myspace.com/APeaInThePodDoulaServices)
Having a doula at your birth can result in shorter labors with fewer complications, reduce negative feelings about your childbirth experience, reduce the need for pitocin, forceps or vaccum extraction and cesareans and the mother's request for pain medication and/or epidurals. Women who have doulas present at their births are more likely to have successful breastfeeding relationships, and are less likely to suffer from postpartum depression. I honesly can't think of a disadvantage of having a doula at your birth, unless you have a negative relationship with your doula. It is essential that you find someone that you feel comfortable with and supports the vision you have for your birth experience.
Yes this is possible, though it can often be very difficult. Before making the decision, you should probably do some research on VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) and determine if this is something that you want to do. Birth doulas are also good support during a VBAC.
