It is now a tradition that the role of the GG is taken in turn, with a Francophone for a 5 year term, then an Anglophone is chosen. In any case, the GG MUST be fully fluent in both official languages of Canada. The GG is the commander in chief of the Canadian Forces amongst his many duties and obligations. He or She is the direct representative of the Monarch, in Canada. The GG serves at the pleasure of the Queen. The official residence of the GG is Rideau Hall, located directly across the street from number 24 Sussex Drive, the official residence of the Prime Minister.

Her Excellency was appointed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, on the advice of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and assumed office on October 2, 2017. The Governor General is the representative of the Queen in Canada and carries out the Queen's duties as Head of State on her behalf.
