Yes, they are as you say, but they are useful as "sky-marks" in mapping astronomical objects. Perhaps the most obvious is the Orion Nebula, just about visible to the naked eye in good viewing conditions as a faint patch of fuzzy light. We say It is "in" Orion, but none of the constellation's stars have anything to do with each other or the nebula.
