The design was the work of Eleanor Lovelace (wife of Lieut. Col. Alec Lovelace, C.M.G., M.B.E, M.C in post as British Administrator 1960-1964 ,now deceased). The Coat of Arms was accepted with an agreed small change, which was the inclusion of a piece of land under the coconut tree to indicate an island.
She was an art teacher before leaving Great Britain after the second world war for the West Indies for another teaching post in Mauritius, where she met Alec Lovelace and married him before he took up post first in Antigua and then in Dominica. She is now 98 yrs old (2014) and living in the south east of England.

It was created in line with the National Flag and Coat of Arms Ordinance in 1960. It was officially adopted in 1975. Before this, there were numerous coats of arms within Nigeria.
The coat of arms of Trinidad and Tobago was designed by a committee formed in 1962 to select the symbols that would be representative of the people of Trinidad and Tobago. The committee included noted artist Carlisle Chang and the late designer George Bailey. The palm tree crest at the top of the coat of arms was taken from Tobago's coat of arms before it was joined in political union with Trinidad.
