In 1513 Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama and was the first European to see the Pacific Ocean. Cortes goes into the interior of Mexico in 1519 with 600 men. Coronado and de Soto explores the southwest from 1540-1542. Coronado discovers the Grand Canyon and de Soto reaches the Mississippi. Pick any one of these men as having "discovered" America. Columbus did not and neither did Vespucci. In 1889 it was proven that Vespucci lied in his book about his discovery of America and he only landed in South America.

It is taught that Christopher Columbus 'discovered' America in 1492. However; we now know that Native Americans lived in the Americas for centuries before Columbus.
That would be Christopher Columbus although there is some debate as to whether or not he really reached America. It is thought that he may have actually reached islands in the Caribbean.

In North America, nothing. Columbus has been said to have discovered 'America" in 1491, but that was basically only the Caribean islands and a few spots on the coasts of Middle and South America. The (east) coast of North America was first mapped and explored in 1497 by an expedition financed by a British/Welsh merchant called Richard Amerike.
