In the US, there a lot of organizations handling food and drug safety. It is regulated by numerous federal, state and local officials. One of which is the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).
One of the largest standard organization that have a wide range of ensuring food safety as well is the ISO.
The FDA or Food and Drug Administration is responsible for the safety of our food supply and pharmaceutical products. The Public Health Departments monitor the food safety, distribution, and handling of food products to the public.
For the first time, the government took responsibility for food and drug safety
The Bureau of Food and Drugs has been change to Food and Drug Administration by former Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo during her administration. It is a regulatory agency that ensures safety, efficacy, purity and quality of processed foods drugs, diagnostic reagents, medical devices, cosmetics and household hazardous substances through state-of-the art technology, as well as the scientific soundness and truthfulness of product information, for the protection of public health. The Director is Prof. Clare Lasola.

They can also recall foods and drugs that are unsafe or have been tainted. The United States Department of Agriculture oversees agricultural production in the country.
It regulates the products that are sent out by manufacturers to the consuming public; it ensures that the products passed the imposed criteria or standards before they get out to the market to protect the public that consume them.
The Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938 required pharmaceutical companies to prove both safety and efficacy before a drug entered the marketplace.
