Ulysses S. Grant first served in US Army invading Mexico in the Mexican-American War. In the Civil War he served as a Union General, first in the Western Theater at the Battle of Shiloh and taking Vicksburg. Then Lincoln promoted him General-in-Chief and transferred him to the Eastern Theater for the Wilderness campaign and seige of Richmond. He was the Union General who accepted the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox, Virginia, virtually ending combat in the Civil War.
