During the 1980s and 1990s, Barack Obama attended the Chicago-based Trinity United Church of Christ, led by Reverend Jeremiah Wright. While Pastor Wright later became controversial in the conservative press (and then in some of the mainstream sources) during the 2000s, there is little evidence he was controversial during the early years when Barack and his wife Michelle attended. Rev. Wright performed the Obamas' wedding ceremony in 1992; Chicago newspapers of that time regarded Pastor Wright as someone very involved in the black community and someone with strong opinions about making society better. After Mr. Obama became president and moved to Washington DC, he attended several different Protestant churches, but did not officially belong to any one of them. He also maintained close relationships with several pastors, who came to the White House to offer guidance whenever he asked them to do so.
