Bess in the poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes was an inn keeper's daughter who loved the highway robber. She sacrificed her life to save her lover who anyway after her death did not wish to live. Knowing that the highwayman would come for her in the dead of the night, cops tied her to a loaded gun and waited. When she heard the horse hoof beats of her lover approaching, she fired this gun tied to her body to warn him of the danger awaiting him. Hearing the shot and her scream, he did not flee but came straight forward to be shot by the cops awaiting him in the dark. Thus Bess became a symbol of bold immortal love and sacrifice.
In Alfred Noyes's poem, The Highwayman, Bess is the young, spirited daughter of a landlord. She is very beautiful ("the landlord's red-lipped daughter") and has flowing "sweet black waves" of hair, into which she plaits a love-knot to symbolize her commitment and love to the Highwayman. She is incredibly brave, which we can infer from how she dared to see and have a relationship with the Highwayman, despite the dangers, and the fact that her father had probably forbidden it. This is reinforced by how she had the courage to sacrifice her own life for the life of her love. She is also determined, which is shown by how she "writhed her hands till her fingers were wet with sweat or blood!" Even in extreme danger, she did not dissolve into despair and self-pity; rather, she did the only thing that she could to save her love from certain death. However, in my mind at least, her most important characteristic is her devotion and unconditional love for the Highwayman, shown in how she gave everything she had in an attempt to keep him alive.
Bess is portrayed as brave, loyal, and resourceful in "The Highwayman." She is willing to sacrifice herself to warn her lover, the highwayman, of danger, showing her deep love and devotion for him. Bess's actions ultimately lead to the tragic ending in the poem.
Love is an inexplicable bond between two people. It may be he just lusted for her, or he may have actually cared about her (as evidenced by his willingness to sacrifice his life trying to save her).
Bess is the beautiful daughter of the landlord. The landlord is the owner of the old inn. Bess has long black hair and dark black eyes and is beautiful from everyone's perspective.
