Porter is a special assistant to Atlanta Braves general manager John Coppolella. Before his elevation to the team's front office in October 2016, he was Atlanta's third-base coach during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

He was the manager of the Houston Astros from September 27, 2012 to September 1, 2014. A longtime resident of Houston, he had served as an assistant coach with the Florida Marlins (2007-2009), the Arizona Diamondbacks (2010) and the Washington Nationals (2011-2012) before taking on the Astros' managerial position. As a player, he was an outfielder with the Chicago Cubs (1999), the Oakland A's (2000) and the Texas Rangers (2001).

Porter's overall record as manager of the Astros was 110-190.
