A:Jeremiah is classified as one of the 'major prophets' of the Old Testament. His life spanned the end of the monarchy and the early years of the Babylonian Exile.

His political views differed from those of Ezekiel and some of the later prophets. For example, he maintained the disctinction between Israel and Judah, whereas the later prophets sought to portray Israel as part of the natural inheritance of the Jews. He was one of those who urged Jehoiakim to surrender to Nebuchadrezzar to avoid certain defeat. After an assassination in which he might have been implicated, Jeremiah fled to Egypt, where he settled in Tahpanhes in the eastern delta and continued to provoke the anger of his fellow Judeans, on one occasion over their continued worship of the 'queen of heaven' (Jereremiah 44).

Another Answer:

Jeremiah was one of only three humans God said He knew before they were born - the other two being John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. He had a very special mission to be a prophet to 'NATIONS' and not just the tribe of Judah - nicknamed the Jews.

Jeremiah 1:5New King James Version (NKJV)

5 " Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;

Before you were born I sanctified you;

I ordained you a prophet to the nations."

The role played by Jeremiah was as a prophet who told the people to repent from their sins and idol worship. But as they failed to do so , they were taken as slaves to Babylon.

Additional Answer:

God raised up a very special prophet for a quite strange commission. In Jeremiah 1:5 we read, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet of NATIONS." wow, only 2 other men were sanctified for their respective offices before they were born - John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. And Jeremiah was the 1st.

Now in verses 9-10, God says, "I have set you this day over NATIONS and over KINGDOMS, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build and to plant."

Notice how Jeremiah was set over NATIONS - more than one Kingdom. A Jewish teenager who lives in Judah which is about to be conquered by Babylon . A prophet over Judah, but not just Judah - over NATIONS and KINGDOMS to do 2 things: to root out, pull down and to overthrow; and then to build and to plant. But what, when and how? Does this have anything to do with the throne of David and Israel/Judah?? An interesting adventure awaits any who delve into Scripture with an open mind and prays for understanding. Blessings :)

Jeremiah in the old testament was a major prophet, he is referred to as the weeping prophet. Jeremiah also wrote the book of Lamentations. He warned the Israelites to repent from idol worship, but as they did not do so they were taken captive to Babylon.

Additional Answer:

Jeremiah was a contemporary of Ezekiel and Daniel who was released after Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon captured Judah. He was one of only 3 individuals whom God says He sanctified and ordained while in the womb - knowing him before He formed him in the belly (Jeremiah 1:4-5). The other two were John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. Jeremiah was a special prophet with a special mission to the House of Israel - but he only went to the House of Judah as the other 10 tribes had been in captivity of the Assyrians for more that 100 years at his time.

God revealed to Jeremiah the 'Key of David' message noted in Revelation 3:7-8 - the greatest and most inspiring vision in the Bible. Few understand this. Jeremiah was set over nations - more than one kingdom, a prophet over Judah but not just them as he was to 'pluck up or root out and to pull down or overthrow the throne of David in Judah and then to build and plant this throne until Christ's return as this throne is to be preserved forever as God promised.

Jeremiah 1:10New International Version (NIV)

10 See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant."

Jeremiah was one of only three people mentioned in the Scripture that God says He 'knew' and commissioned before they were formed:

Jeremiah 1:4-5New King James Version (NKJV) The Prophet Is Called4 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;

Before you were born I sanctified you;

I ordained you a prophet to the nations."

His name means 'the Lord founds' and many think of Jeremiah as the 'gloomiest prophet in The Bible - the word 'jeremiad' means a prolonged lamentation or complaint. And he does discuss some very gloomy prophecies in his book but in its entirety, the Book of Jeremiah is very positive. It is an end-time book (dual as it relates to his current time as well) for the House of Israel and all who interact with them.
