It is something that slowly evolved, and didn't completely come about until the British invasion in the 1960's. The reason I do not say the 1950's, is because Elvis' style of music was considered to be Rockabilly. At that point in time, "1950's Rock 'n' Roll" had not evolved into Rock 'n' Roll. It was a strong blend of Country, Gospel, and the Blues that had yet to be blended well.
