Christians believe that Satan is the devil. Satan entered post-Exilic Judaism as the 'adversary' but under the instructions of God, as we see in the Book of Job. In Christianity, Satan evolved to become the evil opponent of God, seeking to cause the faithful to deviate from righteousness and to destroy God's kingdom. Satan continued to evolve throughout much of the Middle Ages, at time as a figure of fun and sometimes with changes in how he exerts his wicked powers.

Christian answer:The Devil was called Lucifer (meaning Bearer of Light) and Son Of The Morning when he was an archangel in heaven. He became prideful and rebelled against God in the spirit world and was cast out along with one third of the angels (those that he had convinced to follow him). He is now known as Satan and the ''prince of the power of the air." He is neither in Heaven nor in Hell but on the earth. The Bible warns us that not only does he "prowl about like a roaring lion," but also that he is "the god of this world, the prince and power of the air." He in his invisible form is active in deceiving, perverting, and corrupting all that is good and right in the world. He will eventually be destroyed, thrown into the lake of fire at the final judgment. We get a glimpse into Satan works and deeds in the book of Job. Islamic answer:Muslims believe that the devil is not belonging to Angels. Angels were created by God from light while the devil was created from fire. Angels are true and fully God obedient while the Devils are God disobedient and are enemies to mankind. The devil is called Satan. The devil is called in Arabic as 'Sheitan' or 'Iblis'. The devil or Satan or sheitan was living with the Angels close to God in the Heavens. When he disobeyed God to bow to Adam as expression of glorifying God for this creation, he was expelled from God mercy. He then vowed to persuade mankind to do disobey God except those who are strongly devoted to God. That is why the Devil is the first enemy to humankind. Jewish Answer:There is no such being as the devil in the Tanach (Jewish Bible) or Jewish teachings. The concept of the devil was introduced by Christianity. In Hebrew, the word 'sahtan' is simply an adjective meaning 'adversary'.
According to the Bible, the Devil is simply a disobedient angel; much like a 'criminal' is a disobedient (lawbreaking) human. The criminal was not 'born' such; likewise the Devil was not 'created' such.

Before Jehovah created the physical universe with all it's physical elements; God had created 'spirit beings' like himself; called in the Bible 'angels'. They were created without any defect. They were granted an existence without a 'life-span'. But any existence is always hinged upon their co-operation with God's standards, which are not burdensome, but beneficial in all regards. God also created 'inteligent living beings' with 'free will'. Thus God introduced the possibility of 'choices'. But with choices comes consequences.

For example, if humans 'choose' to jump off a tall building, (disobeying the LAWS of gravity which God decided to put in-place) simply because we were given 'free choice'; -- there is a consequence for wrong use of that choice. Likely it will end in death. Likewise with disobeying any of God's righteous requirements. According to the prophetic pronouncement in Genesis 3:15, the Devil will eventually have his 'head crushed' by the reigning King, Christ Jesus. There will eventually be a completely clean, figurative 'new heavens' once again.
