The word maharishi means great sage. The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who passed away on February 5, 2008, was the one of the most recognized spiritual leaders of the world. He was widely regarded as being the foremost scientist in the field of consciousness and is most well known for introducing the Transcendental Meditation technique to the West.

The Maharishi was born in India on January 12, 1917 as Mahesh Prasad Varma. He received a degree in Physics from Allahabad University in 1942. He then studied for 13 years under Swami Brahmananda Saraswati Shankaracharya, also known as Guru Dev, learning Vedic teachings of the Advaita school of Vedanta. Taking his learning to the next level, the Maharishi restored the ancient but lost practice of Transcendental Meditation and brought it to the US in 1959. During the past 50 years, more than six million people, from every profession, age, educational background, and religion have learned the Transcendental Meditation technique and are rising to enlightenment through their twice-daily practice.

Many celebrities practice Transcendental Meditation for example; The Beatles, Mia Farrow, Shirley MaClaine, Mike Love, Jerry Seinfeld, Donovan, Moby, Cheryl Crow, Laura Dern and Heather Graham.
