While light was never actually "discovered", a multitude of scientists worked over many generations to develop the laws and understanding of light we have today. These included the Greeks Euclid and Hero in the first century who realized that light traveled in a straight line. Around 1000 A.D., an Arab mathematician and physicist Alhazen demonstrated how light comes from the Sun as its source, reflecting from an object to the eyes to be seen. In the 1600s, Galileo and Johannes Kepler perfected the refracting telescope, providing some of the laws of refraction. Perhaps the most known scientist responsible for the study of light was Isaac Newton who showed how white light was made up of a combination of all colors. Many others like Francesco Grimaldi discovered the principles of diffraction. Countless others in following centuries added to human knowledge of light, from Hertz to Planck to Einstein. Scientists learned about light by relying and building on the information of others.
