Iftikhar Ahmed Choudhry was originally appointed Chief Justice by Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf in May 2005, but was suspended and placed under house arrest in November 2007 after refusing to resign at Musharraf's order.
Choudhry was released by new Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilliani after Gilliani won the country's election in March 2008, but was not immediately reinstated as Chief Justice. The Lawyer's Movement, lead by Mian Nawaz Sharif, conducted a long march demanding Choudhry and the other deposed judges be reinstated.
Choudhry's current term of office began on March 22, 2009.
